About

Hey. Welcome. Tea or Coffee?

I’m Sarah Kay Bierle, an author, speaker, and researcher focusing on the American Civil War. I graduated from Thomas Edison State University with a BA in History, volunteer as the managing editor at Emerging Civil War, and work in the Educational Department of the American Battlefield Trust. From writing books and hosting conferences to research projects and blogging, I’m blessed to stay busy in the public history field, trying to address the context and complexity of the past while still looking for positive, learning aspects.

My desire to understand and better interpret history started at a young age during my homeschooled years in California, and later I moved across the country to Virginia to pursue my research closer to the Civil War locations in the east. I love to travel and research on location at local libraries, archives, and history sites (though that’s been on-hold due to the pandemic). It’s always a pleasure to meet new friends or chat up with long-time acquaintances, and I truly think that’s one of the best parts about research trips and speaking engagements.

I’ve been learning about the importance of listening to concerns and conversations. It’s also important to approach history with a desire to understand and show the full story through writing or interpretation. Whether chatting with a colleague, new acquaintance, or picking up a 160-year-old primary source, I’m starting with this approach. Ready to listen and asking:

Past and present, everyone has a story…what’s yours?
